A wire rope problem can stop a suspended platform in seconds — and most of the time, the cause is a few habits on site. In this guide, we explain why a traction hoist wire rope jams or kinks, and how to prevent it. The equipment behind every safer lift: RIGID Machinery.
A wire rope (also called steel wire rope) is made of small wires twisted into strands, and strands twisted into a rope. Under load, the rope naturally wants to twist. When it can't release that twist, two things can happen:
· The rope jams inside the traction hoist.
· The rope kinks — a permanent "dead bend" — when it goes slack.
· Worn or damaged steel wire rope
· Too much slack rope
· A loose or frayed rope end
· Debris in the traction hoist rope groove
· Rope out of position on the sheave

1. Keep surplus wire rope on the roof. On the ground, leave no more than 1 m — tie it up off the ground.
2. Never lay the top wire rope on the ground. Tie it up and hang it on the rear suspension bracket.
3. At the end of each shift, keep the suspended platform off the ground and the wire rope taut.
4. Replace qualified steel wire rope and service the traction hoist on schedule.
5. Operators of any suspended platform hoist or man-riding hoist must be trained by an authorized dealer.

· Jammed traction hoist wire rope? Stop. Never force it. Inspect, then jog slowly in reverse.
· Kinked wire rope? Never reuse it — cut out the section or replace the whole rope.
· Golden rule: never force a jammed traction hoist, and never lift with a loose wire rope.
